Vice Chairman (VC) Received Australian Consul General

On Friday 14 September 2018, VC of the People's Committee (PC), Truong Quang Hoai Nam received Ms. Karen Lanyon, Australian Consul General to Vietnam, who paid him a courtesy call at the PC premises.

During the call, both sides exchanged their views on the development of the bilateral relation between both countries, which was further tightened by the signing of the joint statement on the establishment of the Vietnam – Australia Strategic Partnership in March 2018 on the occasion of PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc's official visit to Australia. It was their expectation that such partnership will enable Vietnam and Australia to promote their investment and cooperation relationship in various aspects in the near future.

Speaking of the Can Tho – Australia relationship, Mr. Hoai Nam expressed his concern and sincere gratitude towards the support provided by the Australian government to the city in education, healthcare and social welfare. Particularly, its direct aids have helped marginalized community of the city improve their living standards, get better accesses to healthcare services, market and educational opportunities.

He hoped that direct flights operated by VietnamAirlines or VietJet from Can Tho city to Australia and vice versa could be considered and developed in order to boost the trade, transportation and business opportunities among enterprises, companies and organizations of both sides. In addition, Mr. Hoai Nam expected to receive more delegations from Australia to come to Can Tho city to explore chances for investment and cooperation in clean water, logistics and agriculture.

In following his remarks, Consul General Karen Lanyon sincerely thanked VC Hoai Nam, municipal line agencies for the support and favorable conditions helping her and her colleagues to have the successful trip to Can Tho city. She additionally stated that she would try every effort to connect Can Tho city with Australian companies and enterprises to help the city's fulfill its needs in expanding direct flight routes to Australia.

Speaking of the coming months of the year, she would like to ask for the city's concern and attention to (2) the direct aid programs by having interested applications sent to the Australian Consulate General for consideration and decision; (2)  appointment of participants to a women's conference on 15 – 16 October organized in Ho Chi Minh city and (3) the Viet Water event in early November. The latter 2 issues, shared by the Consul General, would aim at giving relevant stakeholders from both sides with practical chances to connect with each other for preferable cooperation activities.

Before wrapping up the meeting, the delegation got the city's confirmation on its involvement in the aforesaid 3 aspects. Moreover, relevant agencies would get in touch with the Consulate General soon for detailed discussions.
