Viet Nam calls for climate change deal by 2015
He made this plea at the United Nations Climate Change Summit in New York on September 23, saying that the agreement must reflect the principle of equity and shared and differentiated responsibilities under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
The agreement must cover issues of adaptation, mitigation, financing, technology transfer, capacity building and means of implementation, as well as clear and transparent information on national contributions, he said.
Minh told the nearly 120 state representatives that Viet Nam aims to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 8-10 percent compared to 2010, and lower its energy consumption per GDP by 1-1.5 percent per year.
Viet Nam is drafting a report on "Intended Nationally Determined Contributions" (INDCs) which sets out the country's contributions to climate change mitigation, adaptation and financing, with a view to preventing a 2 degree Celsius temperature increase, he added.
Delegates from other countries also shared their views on climate change resilience in finance, energy, industry, agriculture and forestry, and transport.
