On May 9, 2014, Vice President of People's Committee of Can Tho City -Truong Quang Hoai Nam and representatives of concerned departments had a meeting with Mr. Chen Bor Show (Tran Bach Tu), President of Taipei Cultural and Economic Office in Ho Chi Minh City.

Assigned by Vice-Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee – Truong Quang Hoai Nam, Promotion Center of Tourism, Trade and Investment gave a brief introduction on the socio-economic situation, potentials, strengths and sectors which Can Tho city is able to cooperate with Taiwan. In addition, Vice Chairman of Can Tho city People's Committee confirmed that Can Tho city always looks forward to widening the cooperation relationship with Taiwan at all fields including economy, investment, culture, society, especially Golf court construction investment at Can Tho city.

On the occasion of the visit of President of Taipei Cultural and Economic Office to Can Tho city, Mr. Vice Chairman of the city People's Committee informed the delegation that the investment and cooperation trend of Taiwanese enterprises in Can Tho City was too modest compared with that of Japan, Korea, and several European countries while the business conditions and environment in the city is very suitable to Taiwanese partners. Mr. Vice Chairman suggested the President of Taipei Cultural and Economic Office introduce the potentials of Can Tho City to Taiwanese enterprises more. He affirmed that Can Tho City was always eager to expand cooperative ties with Taiwan in various fields such as economy, investment, culture, society, and especially the construction of golf court and the expansion of the direct flight route from Taiwan to Can Tho. He also officially invited the President, his colleagues and family to travel to Can Tho to explore the beauty of this riverside city later and have further work and cooperation in the city.

Responding to the Vice Chairman, the President of Taipei Cultural and Economic Office highly evaluated the competence and knowledge of Mr. Truong Quang Hoai Nam about Can Tho city although Mr. Vice Chairman has just been in charge recently. He appreciated the warm welcome that Mr. Vice President gave to his delegation. Mr. President also said that Taiwan had strengths in the areas of textiles, leather, footwear, wood, dyes… However, due to Vietnam strict environmental regulations, several Taiwanese companies are afraid to invest in Vietnam market in general and Can Tho City in particular. In addition, the infrastructure of Can Tho City has not been very smooth; for example there has not been a highway straight to Can Tho City but only to My Tho City, thus discouraging Taiwanese enterprises from investing in Can Tho City.

Related to the friendly cooperative relations between the two parties, the Taipei Office of Economy and Culture was committed to providing information on Taiwanese Government's scholarship programs to officials of Can Tho City with short-term Chinese courses as well as Master's and Ph.D's studies.

Mr President of Taipei Cultural and Economic Office also agreed with Mr. Vice Chairman's opinion that there should be a Can Tho – Taiwan direct flight route. Moreover, Mr. President was committed to providing the Association of Taiwanese enterprises and other Taiwanese businesses with information on the areas calling for foreign investment of Can Tho City. He also informed that there would be a survey team of Taiwanese enterprises visiting the city to learn about investment and cooperation opportunities in the future, and he expected to have the support and help of the city for the teams.

Both parties expressed their desire to promote the friendly relations and cooperation of Taiwan – Can Tho to a new level, more thorough and more effective.

After the courteous meeting with the leaders of the city's People's Committee, the Taiwanese delegation will continue to meet the Southwest Steering Committee to learn more about the regional macro-economic policies and visit a Taiwanese enterprise doing business in Can Tho City.
