CAN THO: MOBILIZING ALL RESOURCES FROM INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION TO PREVENT COVID-19

             On June 30, 2021, Chairman of the Can Tho City People's Committee Tran Viet Truong signed a  diplomatic letter to leaders of some foreign localities to ask for supporting means and accessing COVID-19 vaccines. In the letter, it is emphasized that the situation of the COVID-19 pandemic in Vietnam is very stressful, and the number of COVID-19 infections is increasing day by day. The government as well as local authorities are making efforts to prevent and control the pandemic, especially towards speeding up the vaccination process for the citizens. The support of these foreign localities at this time is very important to the city, and at the same time, it shows the spirit of international cooperation and solidarity to respond to the pandemic of the two countries in general and of the two localities in particular.

This is one of the specific efforts of the government of Can Tho City in general, including the Can Tho City Department of Foreign Affairs, to implement the Prime Minister's directives on COVID-19 and the National Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control.

Accordingly, after reviewing the localities that have signed a memorandum of cooperation with Can Tho, the Department of Foreign Affairs advised the City People's Committee to send diplomatic letters to localities that are capable of supporting Can Tho by providing equipment and means for COVID-19 prevention activities, especially accessing to COVID-19 vaccines, including: Jeollanamdo (Republic of Korea), Kaposvar (Hungary), La Sayne-sur-Mer (France), Nice (France), Okayama (Japan), Hyogo (Japan) and some localities with close cooperation relations with Can Tho City in the past time: Nasushiobara (Japan), Hiroshima (Japan), and Kobe (Japan) .

Previously, in early June 2021, Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee Tran Viet Truong also had sent a circular note to the Mayor of Riverside, USA with similar content. This is the locality where Can Tho City donated PPE to prevent COVID-19 in April 2020,  when many parts of the world as well as Vietnam were facing difficulties in medical masks.
