Viet Nam reiterates commitment to UN Charter’s purpose, principles

(VNA) - Viet Nam has reaffirmed its strong commitment to the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter at an open debate of the Security Council held on February 23.

The debate on "Maintenance of international peace and security: Reflect on history, reaffirm the strong commitment to the purposes and principles of the Charter of the UN" was organized at China's initiative.

In her statement at the event, Viet Nam's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga stressed that the UN, guided by the purposes and principles of its Charter, has grown to be truly universal and indispensable in coordinating international efforts to address global challenges.

She noted that the UN and its members have relentlessly worked to reign in wars and conflicts, strengthened international cooperation for development and for the promotion and protection of human rights, promoted the progressive development of international law, and strengthened democracy and justice in inter-state relations.

The Ambassador went on to say that the challenges the world faces today are ever more daunting, citing wars in many regions, the risks of armed conflicts and the threat or use of force and the wishful thinking of power politics.

"This compels us to take up our collective duty to reinforce and materialise the strong commitment to the principles and purposes of the Charter, including the principles of sovereign equality, national sovereignty, territorial integrity, non-interference and peaceful settlement of disputes," she said.

The Vietnamese representative also called for redoubling efforts to address issues such as poverty, hunger, and inequality, which are among the root causes of insecurity and instability.

"We must all contribute to the maintenance of international peace and security through concrete, practical actions, including the development and promotion of principles, norms and codes of conducts in accordance with the principles set out in the Charter," the ambassador told the debate.

She added that the Security Council and its permanent members in particular have a special role to play in this regard.

Ambassador Nga made clear that Viet Nam is strongly committed to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and international law, and always contributes actively and constructively to common endeavours for regional and international peace, stability and security.

She affirmed that Viet Nam is working with other ASEAN members and partners to develop and adhere to mutually agreed principles and codes of conduct, and settle all disputes, including the East Sea (South China Sea) issue, by peaceful means, in accordance with the UN Charter and international law.

"We are doing our best to build an ASEAN Community and a Southeast Asian region of peace and prosperity," she said while expressing the firm belief that peace and diplomacy, law and reason will prevail./.
