Mekong Delta Forum discuss measures in response to climate change

The Mekong Delta Forum 2015 was jointly organized by the World Bank, the Australian and Dutch Embassies, the Ministries of Natural Resources and Environment and Agriculture and Rural Development and the Southwest Region Steering Committee.

Speaking at the event, Deputy PM Hoang Trung Hai confirmed that the Mekong Delta plays a strategic role in ensuring food security and sustainable development of the community in the South.

The Vietnamese Government has directed and launched synchronously solutions in response to climate change into socio-economic development plans, asserted the Deputy PM, adding that the Mekong Delta has always received priorities in investment.

Viet Nam expects to receive more assistance from the international community in adjusting the regional sustainable development orientations and plans in response to climate change.

The PM has approved 62 urgent projects on climate change, including 17 projects for provinces in the Mekong Delta and eight ones in terms of building and upgrading dykes and salinity prevention system.

The Government is negotiating with international sponsors to mobilize around US$250 million each year till 2020 to cope with climate change.

Delegates at the forum discussed long-term measures and experience and proposed realistic activities to cope with and mitigate negative effects of climate change on the Mekong Delta./.
