Aviation is becoming one of the important transportation means in Viet Nam, contributing significantly boosting to the country's economic development, enhancing the people's lives and facilitating Viet Nam's extensive international integration, Deputy PM Dung said.

He asked the ICAO to continue providing technical support and sharing information for Viet Nam so that the country could fully implement its flight information region (FIR) management responsibility. The deputy PM also called on the ICAO to back Viet Nam's sending a permanent representative at the organization and vying for a place in Group III (a group of states representing major geographical areas) for the 2022-2025 tenure, aiming to strengthen the country's position in the international civil aviation sector.

Viet Nam supports the ICAO's viewpoint on the implementation of a greenhouse gas emission reduction program in the field of civil aviation, particularly an emission reduction purchase system as a mutual global consensus is reached on the basis of complying with the principle of equality and nondiscrimination, Dung said.

He urged the ICAO to consider and support Viet Nam to build a system monitoring fuel consumption from air transport and develop a specialized management software concerning the issue.

For his part, ICAO Council President Olumuyiwa Benard Aliu expressed his delight at the rapid development of Viet Nam's civil aviation sector, while recognizing the sector's efforts to strictly and effectively implement flight safety and operation regulations and standards.

The guest affirmed his commitment to providing stronger and more effective support for Viet Nam in the development of the civil aviation sector.

The ICAO, made up of 191 members, is a specialized agency of the United Nations. It is tasked with compiling and issuing regulations on aviation throughout the world.

Viet Nam has become an official member of the ICAO since April 12, 1980. So far, the country has always participated actively in the organization's activities, including specialized conferences, technical cooperation programs and sending officials to attend training courses.
