Brunei Sultan to attend 2017 APEC Economic Leaders’ Week

VGP – Second Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Lim Jock Seng affirmed that Brunei advocates Viet Nam to successfully host the APEC Year during a meeting with Deputy PM, FM Pham Binh Minh in Ha Noi on February 27.

He also revealed that the Sultan of Brunei will attend the APEC Economic Leaders' Week, scheduled in November 2017 in the central city of Da Nang.

During the meeting, the two sides agreed to strengthen experience exchanges, trade promotion, and cooperation in oil and gas exploitation as part of efforts to raise the two-way trade value to US$500 million by 2025 as planned.

Both sides agreed to continue implementing the current defense and security agreements, foster cooperation between the two navies, while expanding cooperation to other fields like anti-terrorism and search and rescue.

The two countries agreed to mull over the signing of agreements on trans-border crime combat, mutual legal assistance in criminal matters, extradition, and transfer of sentenced persons.

Mr. Lim Jock Seng, who is also Minister of the Prime Minister's Office, expressed thanks to Vietnamese experts for assisting his country in agriculture and aquaculture development, expecting stronger ties between the two countries in this area.

The pair took the occasion to discuss on activities to mark the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties this year.

They also pledged to coordinate closely and support each other at regional and international forums, especially ASEAN and the United Nations.

The two countries agreed to further enhance solidarity and maintain the central role of ASEAN in the regional security architecture and promote the bloc's relations with dialogue partners, including China.

Both sides committed to maintaining and beefing up peace, security, stability, safety and freedom of navigation and aviation in the East Sea, calling on parties to exercise self-restraint, avoid using or threatening to use forces, fully respect diplomatic and legal processes, settle disputes via peaceful measures based on the basic principles of international law, including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Both sides also reaffirmed their support for full and effective deployment of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) as well as early conclusion of a Code of Conduct in the East Sea.
