Ambassador, Head of EU delegation to Vietnam pays courtesy call on Can Tho City leader

On the occasion of European Film Festival in Can Tho, Mr. Giorgio Aliberti, Ambassador, Head of European Union (EU) delegation to Vietnam pays a courtesy call on Can Tho City People's Committee leader. Chairman Tran Viet Truong, together with representatives of relevant departments and agencies, greets and welcomes Ambassador Aliberti and his delegation.

 

This is the first visit of Ambassador Aliberti to Can Tho and the Mekong area of Vietnam since his start of tenure in Hanoi in September 2019. The Ambassador is very pleased to be in Can Tho to launch the European Film Festival, which is one of the activities organized to mark the 30th anniversary of the establishment of Vietnam and the EU diplomatic relations. The European Film Festival takes place in 4 cities, including Hanoi, Hue, Ho Chi Minh City, and Can Tho. With 13 movies, the festival is one of the EU delegation's initiatives to promote cultural links and enhance mutual understanding between the peoples of Vietnam and the EU.

 

On behalf of the city leadership, Chairman Tran Viet Truong briefs information of Can Tho City to the fist-visit Ambassador, highlighting the contribution of Can Tho to the national GDP and agricultural export in rice, fruit, and aquaculture. The Chairman also brings his focus on health, education, IT, high technology as the priorities of Can Tho. The Chairman expresses his expectation of having more collaboration between Can Tho and EU partners in these sectors, as EU countries are renowned for science, technology, health, education, among others.

 

Ambassador Aliberti expresses his excitement in visiting Can Tho, which is an important part of Vietnam and accounts for a fifth of country's economy. The Ambassador also highlights his concerns in the region's vulnerability to climate change. He mentions that EU countries, such as the Netherlands, has expertise in water management and dealing with water-related issues, and they are willing to share their experience with Vietnamese partners.

 

In addition, the Ambassador also highlights the Europe-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA), which entered into force this August. The EVFTA is an important free trade agreements allowing Vietnam to boost the export of its agricultural products (rice, fruit, etc) to EU market. Ambassador Aliberti emphasizes the potential of smart agriculture for Mekong Delta area, which is an application of IT/digital transformation, just as Chairman Truong has mentioned.

 

Ambassador Aliberti commits to support the city in developing collaboration with EU partners, in education, health, green growth, and other activities for a win-win situation. During this visit, Ambassador Aliberti also has talks with Can Tho University's leadership and students, and is impressed with the enthusiasm of the young generation here.
