Canada supporting Can Tho on gender equality and fighting climate change.

On the afternoon of November 22, 2023, Vice Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee Nguyen Thuc Hien, hosted a meeting with the delegation from the Consulate General of Canada in Ho Chi Minh City led by Canadian Consul General Annie Dubé.
At the meeting, Mr. Nguyen Thuc Hien, welcomed the visit and congratulated Ms. Annie Dubé on her new assignment as Consul General of Canada in Ho Chi Minh City last October. He hoped that during her working term in Vietnam, Can Tho City would have more cooperative activities with the Consulate General of Canada in many fields, especially trade, education, gender equality, and community development.
The Vice Chairman added that in recent times, Can Tho City has had a very close cooperative relationship with Canadian partners and has frequently welcomed the Canadian Ambassador and Consul General to Can Tho City. The two sides coordinated to organize many activities to celebrate the 40th, 45th, and this year - the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Canada in Can Tho City.
After expressing gratitude to the Vice Chairman for the warm welcome, Ms. Annie Dubé said that Vietnam is Canada's number one trading partner in ASEAN and informed some of Canada's current priority areas, including climate change, environmental protection, gender equality. There are currently around 16,000 Vietnamese international students and 275,000 Canadians of Vietnamese origin living in Canada. They have been actively contributing to strengthening the relationship between the two countries.
After the courtesy call, Mr. Nguyen Thuc Hien and Ms. Annie Dubé planted a freshwater mangrove tree at Hau River Park to celebrate the 50th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Canada.
Mr. Nguyen Thuc Hien thanked Ms. Annie Dubé for participating in the above meaningful activity to convey the message of joining hands to beautify the landscape and environment and contributing to making the air cleaner. He also requested the People's Committee of Ninh Kieu District to preserve and take care of the tree carefully so it can grow well.

On the following day, the Consul General had a talk with students of Chau Van Liem High school regarding gender equality and met the leaders of the Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs to learn more about issues related to women and girls in the Mekong Delta.
