Working visit to the Kingdom of Cambodia

In late May 2022, the delegation of Can Tho City led by Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee, Chairman of the City People's Committee Tran Viet Truong, successfully concluded the friendship visit in the Kingdom of Cambodia.

During 4 days in the neighboring country, the delegation met with the Guard Command, Gendarmerie Command, Army Command, Ministry of Interior, Development Department - Ministry of National Defense of Cambodia, and held talks with senior generals in the Royal Cambodian Army such as General Sao Sokha, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Cambodian Army - Gendarmerie Commander; General Hun Manet, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Cambodian Army - Army Commander; General Sok Phal, Secretary of State of Cambodia's Ministry of Interior.

Speaking at the working sessions, Mr. Tran Viet Truong said that this visit is one of the activities towards the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Cambodia (June 24, 1967 - June 24, 2022), in order to tighten solidarity and open up more opportunities for cooperation between Can Tho city and Cambodian localities and military units. Chairman of the City People's Committee emphasized that Vietnam and Cambodia are two neighboring countries with a long-term, sustainable and close cooperation relationship. Can Tho City also has important cooperation and twin cities relations with Phnom Penh, Battambang, and Kompong Chhnang. In particular, during the peak period of the outbreak of the COVID-19, the two sides had close cooperation and timely support for each other to respond to the pandemic. This has vividly demonstrated the spirit of mutual assistance in difficult times between the two nations. However, these cooperation relations have not developed commensurate with the potential strengths and desires of the two sides. Therefore, Can Tho wishes to strengthen cooperation activities in the fields of diplomacy, defense, culture, sports, tourism, business, trade, and cultural exchange with Cambodian partners in the future.

The proposals of the Chairman of the People's Committee of Can Tho city were highly agreed upon by the localities and organizations on the Cambodian side. Both sides affirmed that they always attach great importance to consolidating and strengthening close cooperation, further deepening the relationship of "good neighbours, traditional friendship, comprehensive cooperation, and long-term sustainability" between Vietnam and Cambodia in general as well as between local units of the two countries. The Cambodian partners also proposed that the two sides set up a Working Group to organize the implementation of the contents of the cooperation memorandums, in order to promote cooperation activities between the two sides. This proposal was well taken note by the leaders of Can Tho City.

During this business trip, the delegation also laid a wreath at the Memorial of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers in Cambodia. The delegation spent a minute commemorating the heroes and martyrs of the Vietnamese volunteer soldiers who died in Cambodia during the wars with a pure international spirit, contributing to the cause of national liberation for the sake of peace and friendly relations of the two countries Vietnam and Cambodia.
