U.S. Ambassador Knapper to visit Can Tho City
The Secreatary of Can Tho City Party Committee Mr. Le Quang Manh has had a fruitful conversation with U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam Mr. Marc Knapper upon his first visit to Can Tho last week.
During the discussion, the city leader informed the American diplomat of the cooperation between Can Tho and Riverside since the two cities signed the Memorandum of Understanding in 2015. In particular, in 2020, Can Tho sent PPE including masks and medical gloves to support Riverside during the struggle of the city against COVID-19. In 2021, when Can Tho was struck with the third wave of the pandemic, Riverside citizens helped send medical masks, oximeters, and other PPEs to Can Tho. All of these supports from the two sides are highly appreciated by leaders of the two localities as well as diplomatic missions.
Ambassador Knapper extended his gratitude towards Can Tho City for the kindness to the American people during COVID-19, and hoped there would be further collaboration between Can Tho and U.S. partners in other areas such as education, trade, and people-to-people ties.
During his visit to Can Tho, the U.S. Ambassador also visited Can Tho Lung Hospital and observed USAID-supported activities including the innovative "Double X" tuberculosis detection method in action. In addition, the diplomat toured the Vinamilk factory in Can Tho, highlighted Vinamilk's important role in the Vietnam dairy industry and thanked them for being a great supporter of U.S. dairy products and dairy cattle.
Besides, Ambassador Knapper had meetings with Can Tho University students at the American Hangout and celebrated Earth Month. He discussed the importance of how youth can tackle the climate crisis, and how the United States and Mekong countries are working together to develop programs to safeguard the environment and natural resources, and build a strong, prosperous, and sustainable Southeast Asia.
Ambassador Knapper also reaffirmed U.S. commitment to supporting Vietnam in reaching its climate goals through the Mekong-U.S. Partnership during his visit to Can Tho University's Research Institute for Climate Change (DRAGON-Mekong Institute) to discuss the Mekong Delta's ecological balance and local environmental practices.
