Meeting with Singaporean Consul General

The meeting overview

On the afternoon of 08 September 2023, Mr. Nguyen Van Hieu, Secretary of Can Tho City Party Committee, and Mr. Tran Viet Truong, Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee hosted a courtesy call with Mr. Roy Kho, Consul General of Singapore in Ho Chi Minh City.

At the meeting, Secretary Nguyen Van Hieu expressed his pleasure to welcome the Singaporean Consul General and highly appreciated the constantly developing strategic partnership between Vietnam and Singapore. He informed the Singaporean diplomat that by the end of August 2023, Can Tho City has 82 direct investment projects from abroad, with a total registered investment capital of over 2.2 billion USD. Among these, there are 13 projects with direct investment from Singapore, with a total registered investment capital of about 286 million USD. Currently, Singapore ranks first in the number of projects and second in total registered investment capital in Can Tho City.

Sharing about the city's potential and the investment capacity of Singaporean businesses, the City Party Secretary hopes that the Consul General will introduce Singaporean businesses and investors to Can Tho in the coming time for cooperation and investment in many fields, especially in green and sustainable industry, trade and services, hi-tech agriculture, etc.

Mr. Roy Kho, Consul General of Singapore in Ho Chi Minh City, said that since the news of VSIP opening in Can Tho, he has received many questions from businesses in Singapore wanting to invest in Vietnam, specifically in Can Tho.

Besides, in the field of education, many schools in Singapore are also very interested in having cooperation with Vietnam, so the Consul General suggested that if there is any school in Can Tho that wants to have a Singaporean partner, he would be willing to support the connection for cooperation and exchange between the two sides.

The city leaders and the diplomat also shared their views on the importance of Vietnam – Singapore Industrial Park, which is located in Vinh Trinh Commune, Vinh Thanh District, Can Tho City, with land use scale of 293.7 hectares (phase 1), total investment capital of 3,717 billion VND (nearly 160 million USD). The project will officially be launched on 09 September, 2023.

The Project Launching Ceremony is considered one of the outstanding activities to celebrate the 50th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations, 10 years of establishing the Vietnam - Singapore Strategic Partnership.This project is expected to accompany Can Tho City in its goal of becoming a food processing and distribution center, developing large infrastructure in the Mekong Delta region, and will contribute significantly to structural transformation and promote the socio-economic development of Can Tho City.
