On March 9, the delegation of the Budget Committee of the National Assembly of Germany led by Mr. Sebastian Schafer had a meeting with Mr. Nguyen Thuc Hien, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Can Tho City and representative leaders of departments and agencies in Can Tho City.
At the meeting, the Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development informed about natural disasters occurring in the city as well as causes and solutions to overcome the river bank erosion and sand exploitation.
Mr. Nguyen Thuc Hien also shared on the current situation of sand mining as well as the current scarcity of sand and proposed that the German Government and WWF support the City to expand the range of riverbed sediment monitoring to accurately grasp the volume and evolution of sand inflow from upstream, thereby helping to evaluate the exploitation effectively; study materials to replace river sand to fulfill construction requirements as well as limit the use of river sand to avoid creating negative impacts on the stability of the Mekong Delta; sharing and transferring environmentally friendly construction techniques and technologies.
The City leader and delegation members also wished to cooperate in implementing projects to reduce the impact of climate change and prevent natural disasters, maintain crucial ecological functions, protect the environment stability and reduce socio-economic risks due to climate change in the Mekong Delta.
