Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee Received Canadian Consul General

Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Can Tho City Truong Quang Hoai Nam hosted a reception to Canadian Consul General in Ho Chi Minh City Kyle Nunas yesterday – 13 May 2019.

Mr. Hoai Nam expressed his delight to meet the diplomat again since friendship football match between both sides in August, 2018 to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Canada.

He emphasized that the continuation of such similar events should be maintained to help the city boost its cooperation with the Consulate General of Canada in Ho Chi Minh City in various fields such as economics, education and healthcare. In addition, it is also expected that the event can be expanded to enterprises, investors of Can Tho City and Canada so that they have chances for direct contacts, discussions to deepen mutual understanding and information exchanges for cooperation opportunities in the future. The Vice Chairman expected that through his counterpart, 20 Canadian enterprises, investors could come to Can Tho City for joint activities.

 Mr. Hoai Nam suggested local focal points from Can Tho City to be in charge of B2B matching events, i.e. Can Tho Promotion Agency, Union of Friendship Organizations of Can Tho City and Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry – Branch in Can Tho City (VCCI Can Tho) to liaise with the Trade section of the Consulate General of Canada in Ho Chi Minh for the aforementioned activities.

In response to the Vice Chairman, Mr. Kyle Nunas highlighted both countries' efforts on the CPTPP (Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership), especially since the date it came into effect on 14 January 2019. The diplomat said that the involvement in CPTPP would bring cost advantages to the two countries in the future.

He then briefed his working visits to Mekong Delta sea food producers, VCCI Can Tho and Can Tho 100 Resilient Cities Office (Can Tho CRO) to understand the city status on using technological solutions to increase agricultural yields and combating with climate change.

He agreed that more cooperation from both sides is needed to help Vietnamese know better about Canada. It is very important in the context that more companies in Canada have shown their interests in Vietnam and its application of technologies in agricultural sector.

Speaking of B2B matching, the Consul General would try his efforts to bring Canadian companies to Can Tho to explore cooperation opportunities with the city.
