Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung arrived in Bangkok late December 19 to attend the 5th Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS) Summit scheduled for December 19-20.
Vietnam's attendance at the event is to demonstrate the country's support for the GMS mechanism and affirm the role and position played by the country in promoting sub-regional and regional links as well as the relations between Vietnam and other nations in the sub-region.
The country will take the occasion to call for support from the international community for joint efforts in the sustainable management and use of the Mekong River water source and consolidate the Strategic Partnership with Thailand.
Vietnam has actively participated in GMS cooperation since the mechanism was established in 1992. By June 2014, the country joined many GMS-funded projects on transport, electricity, health care, the environment, tourism, agriculture and urban development, as well as around 130 technical assistance projects in the GMS framework.
After his arrival, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung joined the heads of other delegations at a photo exhibition on the GMS and a welcome banquet hosted by Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha.
The GMS cooperation programme consists of Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar and China's Yunnan and Guangxi provinces.-VNA.
