U.S. Consul General to visit Can Tho

On November 15, 2022, Mr. Nguyen Van Hong, Vice Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee and leaders of relevant departments and agencies of the city hosted a meeting with Ms. Susan Burns, Consul General of the United States in Ho Chi Minh City, who came to Can Tho on her first official visit.

At the meeting, Mr. Nguyen Van Hong informed the U.S. diplomat that in the first ten months of 2022, the export turnover of goods to the U.S. market was 147.67 million USD, the main export items were rice, aquatic products, agricultural products and processed agricultural products, garments, and handicrafts, while import turnover was 1.69 million USD, mainly imported products were pharmaceutical materials, agricultural drugs, and veterinary drugs. Regarding FDI projects from U.S.-origin companies, currently there are 3 projects in mechanical engineering, feed, and vegetable oil.

The city leader also highlighted the sister city relationship with Riverside in California. Two cities have signed a Memorandum of Understanding for cooperation in the fields of health, agriculture and education and training. To strengthen the cooperation relationship between Can Tho city and localities of the United States, Mr. Nguyen Van Hong asked Consul General Burns to assist Can Tho in introducing U.S. businesses to the city's strengths, potentials and policies to attract investors. The U.S diplomat was also asked to coordinate and organize promotional activities, call for U.S. businesses to invest in the fields of processing industry, tourism and other areas of strength of the city. In addition, the Vice Chairman also informed the Consul General that in 2023 there would be a high ranking delegation of Can Tho to visit Riverside and other places in the United States for trade promotion.

Speaking at the meeting, Consul General of the United States in Ho Chi Minh City Susan Burns said that with the advantage of being the center of the Mekong Delta region, Can Tho had a lot of potential and strong development in medical infrastructure. economy, education and especially the strength in transport infrastructure. Therefore, Can Tho city was considered as one of the partners that the United States aimed for.

During this visit, the U.S. Consul General also visited Can Tho University and Mekong Delta Center for Women's Development.
