President of the Assembly of Mozambique to visit Can Tho City
On June 22, 2022, Mr. Le Quang Manh, Secretary of the City Party Committee and leaders of departments and agencies had a meeting with Ms. Esperanca Laurinda Francisco Nhiuane Bias, President of the Assembly of the Republic of Mozambique.
At the meeting, Secretary Le Quang Manh expressed his delight to welcome the delegation, brief information about the socio-economic situation with the potential for rich agricultural development and many other fields of Can Tho City. The Secretary of the City Party Committee emphasized that Vietnam and Mozambique have had a traditional friendship and solidarity for many years. This visit of the President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Mozambique is an important highlight in further promoting the friendship and multifaceted cooperation between the two countries. The Secretary believed that the potential cooperation between Can Tho City and Mozambique in particular and the provinces in the Mekong Delta in general will contribute to bringing the good relationship between the two countries to a new height and growing in the following years.
Ms. Esperanca Laurinda Francisco Nhiuane Bias, thanked the leaders of Can Tho City for the warm welcome and thanked Vietnam for supporting Mozambique in its candidacy for the position of a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council and looking forward to Vietnam's sharing her experience to fulfill this role. The President also highlighted the active support of the two nations for each other at multilateral forums. The head of the National Assembly of Mozambique hoped that this official visit would create opportunities to further promote the good cooperative relationship between the two countries in general and with Can Tho City in particular.
In the afternoon of the same day, Ms. Esperanca Laurinda Francisco Nhiuane Bias, visited Con Son Feed Factory and Con Son A farming area of South Vina Co., Ltd. in Bui Huu Nghia Ward, Binh Thuy District, Can Tho City. Ms. Esperanca Laurinda Francisco Nhiuane Bias acknowledged the achievements of South Vina Company and expressed her interest in farming, processing and exporting activities and wished the company continued development in the coming time.
On the next day of her visit in Can Tho City, the President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Mozambique and the high-ranking delegation visited the Mekong Delta Rice Research Institute.
Dr. Tran Ngoc Thach, Director of the Mekong Delta Rice Research Institute, introduced the establishment and development of the institute and its contributions to scientific research on rice for the Mekong Delta region. With a total area of 360 hectares, the Mekong Delta Rice Research Institute has spent about 60 hectares for experimental work and 220 hectares for seed production.
Since its establishment in 1977, the Mekong Delta Rice Research Institute has registered to circulate 180 rice varieties, accounting for nearly 75% of the total annual rice cultivation area of the Mekong Delta. The Mekong Delta Rice Research Institute has researched and transferred 25 farming techniques on rice and rice-based crops, applying agricultural mechanization and rice production.
According to Dr. Tran Ngoc Thach, in the challenges to rice production, the Mekong Delta Rice Research Institute will conduct research and register for circulation short-term rice varieties that are resistant to adverse weather conditions, giving a yield of 7 to 8 tons/hectare, meeting the requirements of 2 to 3 rice crops/year. The Mekong Delta Rice Research Institute also focuses on researching high-quality rice varieties that meet export requirements and adapt to climate change.
Ms. Esperanca Laurinda Francisco Nhiuane Bias, President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Mozambique, expressed her impression and appreciation for the research and cooperation results to produce seed rice for the Mekong Delta region of the Mekong Delta Rice Institute.
In Mozambique, people also benefit greatly from the research of institutes and schools in agricultural production. During the visit, the President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Mozambique highly appreciated Vietnam in rice production and hoped that Vietnam would promote its achievements in sustainable rice production. The high-ranking delegation of the National Assembly of Mozambique raised concerns about sustainable agricultural production and effective farming methods. The transfer of rice cultivation techniques to producers, the public-private partnership between institutes and enterprises, universities in researching, selecting and creating new rice varieties to meet market demand and appropriate structure for rice production and creating a value-added chain for rice products to improve the value.
The President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Mozambique and her delegation were also guided to visit the demonstration model of rice varieties in the fields.
