GIZ proposes the project on natural hazards and climate management in Can Tho City
On the afternoon of August 1, leaders of Can Tho city and related departments and agencies had a meeting with the German Development Cooperation Organization (GIZ) on the proposal to implement the project "Integrating natural hazards and climate management through digitized information on risks and financial solutions to prevent risks" in Can Tho City and the Mekong Delta region.
The project is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) with its priority for implementation in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam, expected to be implemented from 2023 to 2025. The objective of the project is to improve the institutional capacity of Vietnamese agencies on natural hazards risks and climate change; supporting the selection and implementation of financial and insurance solutions to prevent climate and natural disasters, serving the infrastructure system of the Mekong Delta.
At the meeting, the representative of GIZ presented ideas to implement the project, and proposed actual survey requirements to collect data related to the current status of infrastructure in Can Tho city and other provinces in the Mekong Delta.
Accordingly, GIZ will prioritize the implementation of activities such as: building and developing a data information system, assessing information on risks to existing infrastructure; building disaster risk management capacity; building technology development dossiers; propose solutions to develop and apply financial instruments for natural hazards risk prevention and climate change in provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta region.
According to Mr. Nguyen Van Hong, Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee, Can Tho has many investment projects of infrastructure works, among them, there are some projects that have built a database on technical infrastructure management. However, the city still does not have a complete system of equipment to serve the needs of technical infrastructure database management for natural hazards prevention and control, and adaptation to climate change.
From the above fact, in addition to the desire to cooperate in implementing the project, the city leader has proposed that GIZ share more experiences in technical infrastructure management, as well as support the capacity building for local officials. At the same time, the organization has been requested to support new equipment, machines and technologies for the city to manage the technical infrastructure database, effectively serving the work of natural hazards prevention and control and adaptation to climate change.
