Can Tho City receives Environmentally Sustainable ASEAN City Award

Can Tho City is honored to receive the 5th ASEAN Environmentally Sustainable City Award.

Specifically, at the 32nd ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Environment - ASOEN 32 taking place online from September 15 to 17, 2021, the nomination list for the 5^th ASEAN Environmentally Sustainable Cities Award and the 4th Certificate of Potentially Environmentally Sustainable ASEAN Cities - 2021 were approved. This adoption is based on the recommendations of the ASEAN Working Group on Environmentally Sustainable Cities (AWGESC).

According to this result, Can Tho City is honored to receive the 5th ASEAN Environmentally Sustainable City Award. The award ceremony will be held on the sidelines of the 16th ASEAN Environment Ministers Meeting (AMME 16) in Indonesia, scheduled to take place in October 2021.

According to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, the ASEAN City Award for Environmental Sustainability is within the framework of ASOEN and AMME activities; it was started in 2008 and is awarded every 3 years. Can Tho City is the 5th city of Vietnam honored to receive this award, previously Ha Long City (Quang Ninh Province, 2008), Da Nang City (2011), Hue City (Thua Thien Hue Province, 2014) and Da Lat City (Lam Dong Province, 2017).

The ASEAN Environmentally Sustainable City is an important award to honor and promote the image of typical cities in terms of environmental quality (clean air, clean land and clean water) of countries in the region, raising awareness of the community and leaders at all levels about the importance of environmental protection. The General Department of Environment (Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment) is the unit that implements the accompanying solutions to prepare nomination documents for participating cities.

In recent years, leaders of Can Tho City have paid great attention to environmental protection along with sustainable economic development. The city has many good models and solutions in building a green - clean - beautiful environment, such as building a waste treatment plant that meets environmental standards, the models: "Clean ward", "Bright - green - clean - beautiful route""; the city has been also trying to find solutions to effectively manage, exploit and use clean water and protect water resources... Can Tho City also owns a system of islets along the Hau River, the orchards, urban green areas, all of which help protect the environment and a resource for tourism development.
