Can Tho city cooperates with Korean enterprises on renewable energy

On the afternoon of July 18th 2022, Mr. Tran Viet Truong, Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee and leaders of related departments and agencies had a meeting with SK Group (Republic of Korea) led by Mr. Kwang Min Lyu, Chief of Office of SK Group.

The two sides discussed researching, proposing and implementing green hydrogen production and supply projects to develop Vietnam's hydrogen supply chain in Can Tho as well as developing and attracting customers using hydrogen to invest in a standard industrial park RE100/Net Zero.

According to Mr. Kwang Min Lyu, the governments of Vietnam and Republic of Korea have both issued a declaration on zero carbon by 2050. Therefore, the two sides' businesses are making efforts to work together with the governments in developing a new energy source - hydrogen.

In addition to hydrogen production, SK Group also wants to cooperate with Can Tho in investing in other projects and fields: application of artificial meat production technology, using fertilizers from emissions in the production of hydrogen, energy battery production... These are directions that create a foundation for sustainable industrial development for Can Tho in particular and the Mekong Delta in general.

Speaking at the meeting, Mr. Tran Viet Truong said that at the COP26 Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh committed that Vietnam will cut carbon emissions to zero by 2050. In that spirit, Vietnamese localities and units aim to invite carbon-neutral investment and sustainable environmental protection.

Can Tho City has been identified by the government as an ecological, modern and civilized city imbued with southern cultural identity. In line with that, the city focuses on planning and calling for investment towards clean and green industries.

Can Tho believes that developing renewable energy sources is very meaningful in reducing carbon and protecting the environment. Can Tho has many opportunities to develop renewable hydrogen energy production as the city is the only city in the Mekong Delta that is planned by the government to have a Regional Information Technology Center.

In addition to building a center to linkage, production, processing and consumption of agricultural products in the Mekong Delta in Can Tho, the city also implemented a program of clean organic fertilizers. This can be a great potential to change the habit of using chemical fertilizers to using organic fertilizers and improving local people's living standards.

Mr. Tran Viet Truong said that SK Group and Can Tho could immediately cooperate on an organic fertilizer production project and the Information Technology Center of the Mekong Delta region. Besides, Can Tho is also interested in cooperation in areas that are strengths of SK Group.

After the meeting, Can Tho City and SK Group agreed to carry out the next meetings to continue to exchange issues related to the sustainable development of Can Tho and the Mekong Delta. For any content beyond their competence, the two sides would continue to exchange and advise the government for direction and orientation./.
